I don't claim to be an expert in economics but I've been listening with interest to the outcry from high earners about the new tax rises. Tax is rocketing for our entrepeneurs and they're not happy, claiming that these rises would disincentivize people from setting up their own businesses and taking risks to set out on their own. "It's not fair!" they cry but when has the budget and more specifically taxes, EVER been fair?! There can be no incentive in any form of income tax - the more you earn, the more you pay - where's the "incentive" in that?More's the point - when has anything to do with economics been fair? It's not fair that "the only certain thing in this world is death and taxes". It's not fair that my house is worth less now than when I bought it (with other people's money). It's not fair that we're in this economic crisis in the first place. It's not fair that even in this highly affluent nation there are some of us who still live in poverty. It's not fair that even THEY are probably among the top 5% in the world in terms of wealth and lifestyle...
It's just not fair... period!
[N.B. This is not an ENTIRELY serious post... so please don't shout at me... However, it did make me think a little, to hear people getting so wound up! Also, interesting that this is now yesterday's news thanks to Swine Flu. How quickly we move on...]
